Lion hit back to roar into cup semi-finals

A SURPRISE result looked to be very much on the cards as first half goals from Steve Holdstock and Ashley Draper saw CORONATION CLUB turn round two goals to the good in their Division One cup game against high-flying MARLPOOL WHITE LION.

However, normal service was resumed after the break as goals from James Holes, Richard Groves, Scott Pickworth (2), Cory Bowler and David Krupiak steered their side to a 6-2 victory that cements their place in the semi-final of the competition.

CODNOR MINERS join them after a 9-3 stroll to victory over AFC SOUTH NORMANTON. Man-of-the-match was Steven Guyler who notched a hat-trick; other goals being shared between substitute Lewis Gough, John Griffiths and Jamie Norwood.

JACKSDALE MW moved ominously into the last four after a 7-0 romp over RAINBOW INTERNATIONAL.

SHIRLAND MW were otherwise engaged in DCFA Cup action, but their prospects of making the final of this prestigious competition were dashed as they fell 0-5 at the last hurdle to a strong HOWARD ARMS side.

CRIB entertained SEVEN STARS in what – on paper – seemed a relatively straightforward task in the Dick Windle Trophy. The Division One side dominated the first period but a combination of poor finishing and an inspirational display by the visitors’ custodian Matt Smith resulted in an unlikely 0-0 interval score line. Even more bizarrely, the Stars went ahead soon after the restart through Craig Smith. Crib changed their pattern of play and pushed Chris Green into a more advanced position and it was he who set Dean Owen free to level things up.

Ben Summers smashed home a second before Owen’s half volley for 3-1 completed the scoring. The visitors deserve real credit for a plucky display.

AMBER ATHLETIC progressed to the next round of the Division Two Bowl after seeing off the challenge of THE WHEEL. Goals from John Snowball, Adam Thomas, Ashley Edkins, Matt Wilders (3), Aaron Wood, Adam Thomas and an own goal secured their passage in an 8-3 win.

ALLIANCE HEALTHCARE went down narrowly to a 3-4 defeat against HILCOTE MW in Division 3 league action. Jamie Coxan, Daniel Harris and Matt Vardy each scored for the home team, but strikes by Jamie Nunn, Matthew Craven, Jonathan Bingley and Shaun Hopkinson were enough to secure all three points for their opponents.

HEANOR STAFFS lost 0-4 at home to title challengers GALLOWS INN, whilst BULLS HEAD went down 1-2 to BOUNDARY ATHLETIC in the day’s other match.
