Law delighted with Alfreton display against Barnsley

Alfreton Town boss Nicky Law was delighted with the way Tuesday evening’s first pre-season home game had gone despite a 2-1 defeat against npower Championship side Barnsley.

The Reds boss used numerous trialists throughout the game but there was no sign of hesitancy or lack of understanding as Law’s side produced some good football.

“I was really pleased with how it went. We have asked them to play a little bit different and the players took it on board.” reflected Law.

“With the players we have brought in we are now more than capable of passing the ball around. We asked them to work on ball retention and that was apparent.

“We have come up against a Championship team who had their full squad out and who put out two different sides, one in each half, so our attitude had to be good and it was, everyone was positive. The new lads have come in, fitted in well and showed what they can do” he added.

With another big home test against Leeds United to come on Saturday, followed by Notts County, Burnley and Chesterfield also visiting the Impact Arena, Law was also keen to stress that the toughness of the pre-season home games was something he had planned.

Law explained: “I think with all the pre-season games we have got this year, they are all good quality teams and they are going to be a real test for us but that was the sole purpose.

“You don’t learn a lot from beating lesser teams easily. The opposition we have been lucky enough to get will give us a real footballing test. We have got to not only be able to stand up to it, but we have to be able to play, without losing our identity obviously, but you need to keep the ball better and we have done that against Barnsley.”

This Saturday the Reds host Leeds United at the Impact Arena and segregation will be used with visiting supporters requested to gain entry to the stadium via the away turnstiles at the Alma Street end of the ground. The game kicks-off at 3pm and admission is pay on the gate on the day.

Next Wednesday, Notts County make the short trip aross from Nottinghamshire. Kick-off for this game is 7.30pm.
