A Jamie Sleigh double was enough to earn Heanor Town a 2-1 win over Lye Town and their fifth successive victory in the Midland Football League Premier Division.
Both teams started well and the Lions had a good chance to open the scoring inside 10 minutes when Kyle Hazeldine’s cross found Sam Vickers but his shot was too close to the Lye goalkeeper.
Heanor did break the deadlock midway through the first half when Sleigh reacted quickest to Vickers’ deft flick to smash home from close range.
Vickers almost made it two just before the break. He picked up a loose ball before shooting over from the edge of the area.
Lye threatened to level the game at the start of the second half. Lee Chilton, Lye’s main goal threat, went close twice in two minutes.
It was Heanor who added to the scoring, however. A long ball forward found Sleigh and he fired past the ‘keeper for his sixth goal in three matches. The Lions sat back and invited pressure and it paid for Lye when they got a goal back in the 68th-minute. Adam Meacham’s powerful header set up a nervy finale.
Vickers had a good chance to extend the lead before Pierrepont was forced into smart saves by Chilton as Heanor held on.
