Heanor Town dominate but lose at home

Northern Counties East League Premier Division

Heanor Town 1, Winterton Rangers 2

Heanor Town suffered a case of ‘After The Lord Mayor’s Show on Tuesday night when they surprisingly went down 2-1 at home to Winterton Rangers in Northern Counties League Premier Division action.

Just days after recording a 7-1 away win, the Heanor strike force for once failed to come up with the goods.

Lions joint boss Glenn Kirkwood said: “I can’t believe how we lost the game. They had one shot and won!

“That was as well as we have played in the first half in the three-and-a-half years we have been at Heanor.

“We were so much on top it was frightening. We hit the post four times in the first 20 minutes, but we also caught their keeper on a good day and lady luck was not on our side.

“One stupid mistake, a mix up between our keeper and a central defender cost us. You can’t go gifting goals to teams. But, we will dust ourselves down and go again.”

Despite playing the visitors off the park for long spells, an own goal and a second defensive mix-up cost Heanor dearly against the Humberside club.

In front of a crowd of 96, Heanor got off to a flying start with a goal from Nico Degirolamo after just three minutes.

Winterton levelled on 27 thanks to a Brett Peel own goal and after Josh Batty put Rangers in front on the hour mark, Heanor could not find an equaliser, for all their efforts.

Heanor are away at Blaby & Whetstone Athletic in the FA Cup Preliminary Round on Saturday (3pm).
