And the Grimsby connection does not end there with Lee Mullen, who won the EuroMillions lottery back in 2011, and invested in his hometown club of Grimsby four years later, said to be a new financial backer at The Impact Arena.

McDermott played a record-breaking 647 games in a one-club career at Grimsby over 20 years and went on to become assistant manager to Simon Weaver at Harrogate Town.

He left that position due to illness but then linked up with close friend Marcus Newell as director of football at Cleethorpes Town.

After donating money to the club and becoming a director, Grimsby fan Lee Mullen had a fall-out with the Mariners and became involved with Cleethorpes where he brought in McDermott.

With Harrogate Town going full-time, some of their players are expected to arrive at the Impact with midfielder Luke Shiels, 27, one of three already rumoured to have signed for the Reds.

Cleethorpes Town have just won the Northern Counties East League Title and this Sunday take on South Shields in the FA Vase final at Wembley.
