Heanor Town made a positive start to their Northern Counties East League season on Saturday when they beat hosts Albion Sports 3-0.

In the days leading up to the game, manager Glen Clarence had taken his tally of new signings into double figures with the addition of experienced defender Marc Strzyzewski from Gresley FC and the return of last season’s loanee Courey Grantham.

The Ilkeston FC striker will be with the Lions for the season.

The first chance for the Lions came on seven minutes when Chris Shaw went close with a free kick but the visiting fans didn’t have long to wait for the first league goal.

Seven minutes later, veteran striker Gary Ricketts powered home a header, getting on the end of Shaw’s cross.

Ian Deakin had to be alert to save from Albion Sports’ Danny Facey on 20 minutes and produced an excellent stop on 33 minutes to keep out an Asif Hussein free kick from distance.

Into the second half, there were early bookings for Heanor’s Jared Holmes and Sam Jones but Heanor were looking like scoring at any point as they created a number of chances to extend the lead.

They did this when Courey Grantham marked his return to the club with a curling second.

There were a number of other missed chances for the Lions and they kept creating opportunities to seal the win. Grantham put the result beyond doubt with three minutes remaining, scoring his second of the afternoon with a lob.
