EURO 2016: Cahill believes England deserved more against Russia
Gary Cahill believes England deserved more from their opening fixture of this year's European Championships.
The Dronfield-born defender started in Marseille as Roy Hodgson’s Three Lions produced a dominant performance against Russia.
England were heading for victory when Eric Dier crashed in a free-kick into the top corner of the net on 73 minutes.
But with just seconds remaining in injury time Vasili Berezutsky’s looping header levelled the game for Russia.
“I can’t help thinking we should all be celebrating victory but we got a kick in the teeth at the end which has made the mood after not great,” Cahill, 30, told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“Our performance was fantastic, for sure that’s one of the best performances I’ve been involved in in an England squad. There are a lot of positives to take from it, it should have been a win - it’s hard to take.
“That could have been 3-0 or 4-0 on a different day. I thought the lads were terrific, each and every individual. Our performance was high.
“We wanted to get off to a winning start but if we bring that level of confidence and performance in the next two games, we’ll be fine.”
