WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS! -- boys at John Flamsteed Community School.

For both the U14s (years eight and nine) and the U16s (years ten and 11) have been crowned Amber Valley schools sports champions.

“They have done brilliantly all season,” said Jackie Hampton, of the school. “Being crowned champions is just reward for their effort and commitement in representing the school so adeptly.

“The U16s have been the most successful team at John Flamsteed in recent years. They have made the finals evening for three consecutive seasons, winning twice.”

This year’s finals took place at Belper Meadows, home of Belper Town FC, with the U14s beating Belper School and the U16s defeating Heanor Gate School.

The U14s fell a goal behind during the first half, but levelled with a tremendous goal by Ryan Grace, who embarked on a brilliant solo run into the npenalty area before firing home.

John Flamsteed finished the half in the ascendancy and picked up where they left off as the second period got under way. Their pressure soon paid off as Grace netted the winner after a corner. The team then showed terrific resilience to see the game out.

The U14s’ squad comprised: captain Sam Sanders, who scored ten goals during the season, Luke Wilson, Jack Rowland, Kieran Sanders, Max Doherty, Ryan Grace (three goals), Harry Weston, Bradley Pearson, Adam Hayward (one goal), Hamilton Hands (two goals), Archie Williams (three goals), Rohan Manan, Deakon Messam (one goal), Nathan Cooper (two goals) and Jack Yeomans.

The U16s had to endure a tense penalty shootout after their final had finished 2-2. Both sides missed one, so it went to sudden death, with John Flamsteed goalkeeper Joey Cholerton pulling off a magnificent save to earn his side a 5-4 win. No wonder he was mobbed by teammates!

In the match itself, Heanor Gate took the lead, only for the Flammy boys to level through top scorer Danny Knight and take the lead early in the second half with a looping header by Harrison Moss after a brilliantly driven free-kick to the far post from Harry Jones. Heanor Gate equalised five minutes from time.

The U16s’ squad comprised: captain Harry Jones, who scored ten goals, Joey Cholerton, Will Parrish (two goals), Joe Harrington (one goal), Luke Bradbury (one goal), Jack Tiffney, Morgan Holloway (seven goals), Harrison Moss (seven goals), Sam Grace (one goal), Tom Woodcock (three goals), George Dave (one goal), Danny Knight (15 goals), Sam Clifton, Travis Brown, Chris Barlow and Sam Boyall.
