A brilliant performance enabled Ripley Town to stun unbeaten leaders Sherwin in the Midland Regional Alliance’s First Division with a 2-1 victory.
Ripley’s game-plan was to defend and hit Sherwin on the break. And it worked a treat as the Derby side could find no way past their resolute defence, with Paul Hodson, debutant Stu Ryan and Kieran Murphy superb throughout. At the other end, Ripley created the best chances, with Lewis Parkin and another debutant, 18-year-old Leon Vaughan, a constant threat.
Vaughan set up the opening goal for substitute Alex Cutts and then top scorer Parkin raced clear to finish the second in style. Rocked Sherwin bagged a controversial late consolation, but were also twice denied by terrific saves from Scott Rhodes.
