Anniversary match at Swanwick PR

The stars will come out at Swanwich Pentrich Road this weekend to celebrate the football club’s 50th anniversary.

On Sunday, July 20, from 2pm, there will be a match at the club’s Highfield Road ground between a Swanwick PR past and present side, and a team of ex-professional footballers.

Among the stars scheduled to put in an appearance for the game are Mark Draper, Martin Carruthers, Alan Wright, Nigel Jemson, Julian Joachim, Jamie Lawrence and former England and Forest legend Des Walker.

Lee Lawrence, general manager at Swanwick Pentrich Road FC, explained: “I met Mark Draper locally in a pub, and got talking to him as I’m an Aston Villa fan.

“We were chatting about Swanwick Pentrich Road and the forthcoming 50th anniversary and he volunteered to get a few ex-pros together for a match to celebrate the anniversary.

“We think it’s going to be a good event. Gates open at 12.30pm and the match starts at 2pm.

“There will be a bouncy castle, a barbecue and a bar, so we’d love people to come along and celebrate the club’s 50th anniversary with us.”

Then, on Thursday, July 24, Swanwick PR will be competing at home to Ripley Town for the inaugural David ‘Taddy’ Walters Shield (6.45pm kick off).

Lee said: “We don’t play each other any more in the leagues so we both thought it would be nice to make it an annual event and name the shield after David, who continues to be a real stalwart of the club, for the past 40 years or so.”

Meanwhile, the club continues the preparations for its second season back in the Central Midlands League, to which it returned in 2013-2014 after a two-decade gap.

Lee Lawrwence concluded: “On the pitch, we are looking to the new season with optimism.

“Last season was the first in the CML for 20 years and it took a while to settle.

“We didn’t win until the seventh match but we settled into a decent run as players started to feel comfortable that they belonged in that league.

“We got better and better, won team of the month award for March and are looking forward to this new season.”

The club is looking for new or unattached players to join for pre-season training at its home ground ground on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.30pm and Saturdays from 11am.
