Alfreton Town friendly is abandoned

Alfreton Town’s penultimate pre-season friendly ended prematurely on Tuesday evening when young Reds Academy keeper Danny Hatfield, 18, had his first team debut marred when he suffered a broken nose and experienced breathing difficulties after a collision with a Sutton Town player.

With an ambulance in attendance to treat Hatfield on the pitch, referee Hristo Karaivanov abandoned the fixture on 67 minutes.

A much-changed Alfreton squad, again containing numerous trialist players, made a strong start and they were only kept at bay in the opening 20 minutes by a string of superb saves by former Reds keeper Gavin Saxby.

Alfreton then opened up a 2-0 lead with two goals in a minute on 36 and 37 minutes, both efforts coming from trialists.

The Central Midlands League Premier Division hosts stuck to their task and had got themselves level with a brace of goals from Nathan Hollingworth on 62 and 65 minutes. The first came from the penalty spot, the second a 35 yard free kick.

Two minutes later came the injury to Hatfield and an early end to the game.

The Reds return to the Impact Arena this Friday evening when Chesterfield are the visitors for a third successive summer. The game has a 7.45pm kick-off.

This is the last scheduled official pre-season game for the Reds and with the Spireites expected to bring a good travelling support again, a larger crowd is expected and fans are requested to arrive earlier than usual to avoid any congestion.

Kick-off is 7.45pm and visiting supporters are requested to enter the stadium via the away turnstiles at the Alma Street end of the ground.

Admission is £8 for adults, £4 for concessions - under-16s and over 65’s.
