South Normanton Athletic FC earnwed a 5-2 win against Anstey Nomads on Saturday as they launched their East Midlands Counties League season in style.
South Normanton started the game in a workmanlike fashion but a long throw into the box caused havoc and Shane Newton’s shot and turn was handled on the line by Simon Alexander, who was promptly sent off.
The penalty was dispatched by Newton on seven minutes. A Nomads’ corner had to saved by Normanton’s keeper Steve Smith at full stretch.
Anthony Fay then opened his account for the Shiners with a great 19-yard strike, curled the ball round the keeper into the top right hand corner on 22 minutes. Normanton’s third came from a Tommy Leighton corner on 27 minutes which found Andy Motteshead at the back post. He headed the ball back into the danger area, Newton picked the ball up, turned and fired the ball in for his brace.
The Shiners’ fourth came two minutes later from a free kick. Motteshead climbed like a salmon and with a bullet header from ten yards fired the ball home on 29 minutes,
In the second half, brilliant ball control from hat-trick man Shane Newton saw him turn the defender, go one on one with the keeper and score his third on 54 minutes.
Nomads pulled two back but this was an excellent start for South Normanton.
On Saturday, South Normanton are at Barrow (3pm).
