Denby CC 1sts lost on Saturday at Derbyshire Premier League leaders Swarkestone to make it back-to-back defeats for skipper Joe Greenhalgh’s side.
Defeat at the leaders was only their third league defeat of the season but it means they dropped to seventh, although the teams in the second to seventh positions are still quite tightly packed.
Swarkestone won the toss and decided to ask their visitors to field first.
Denby lost Alexander Eyre in the first over of the innings and Michael Mitchell not long afterwards to leave them on 18-2.
There then followed a rebuilding partnership between Cameron Bancroft (36) and Peter Burgoyne (23) which took the score to 53-3 before Burgoyne departed.
After that a number of players got into the teens without being able to go on and make a crucial contribution, the highest of these being Daniel Burgoyne with 16.
In the end, Denby were dismissed for 158 in 46 overs with former Derbyshire all-rouder Garry Park returning figures of 5-53.
Swarkestone had the ideal start when they replied, as Jamie Guthrie and Christopher Durham put on 91 for the first wicket before the latter was dismissed by Paul Allen for 41.
Sadly, that was to be Denby’s only success as the home side raced to victory in just 28 overs, to win by nine wickets.
Guthrie finished with 71 not out and Park completed a fine all-round contribution with 31 not out.
Denby are next in action on Saturday when they entertain Eckington at the Copper Yard (12.30pm start). Then they are at Matlock on Sunday. As for Denby’s other sides, the 2nds lost to Cutthorpe, the 3rds beat Ambergate and the 4ths won against Allestree in Division 8N.
