Madsen - who signed a new three-year deal this month committing him to Derbyshire until the end of 2019 - was appointed Club Captain in 2012 and led the side to the County Championship Division Two title that year.
He will continue to play a vital part in the Club’s batting line-up, in which he has scored over 1,500 runs across all forms in the last three campaigns.

Godleman, who was Vice-Captain last year, will now lead the side in the Specsavers County Championship this summer.
The 27-year-old enjoyed a standout campaign in 2015 in which he scored over 1,000 first-class runs including three centuries in three consecutive innings.

Wes Durston will continue to lead Derbyshire in the NatWest T20 Blast and Royal London One-Day Cup competitions.

Madsen said: “Having recently extended my contract until 2019, I have been discussing with Graeme how I can best support the coaches and the rest of the team.

“After careful consideration, I’ve decided to stand down to allow Vice-Captain, Billy Godleman, to take over the captaincy.

“It’s been a privilege and an honour to have led the Club for the last four years. As I approach my eighth season with Derbyshire, I am extremely excited by the Club’s vision, the continued development of our young talented cricketers on the field and the superb off-field facilities.

“I look forward to continuing to act as an ambassador for the Club both on and off the field and playing big part in bringing success to Derbyshire in the forthcoming seasons.”
Godleman added: “It’s a huge honour to be appointed captain. It’s an exciting time to lead the Club with the strides we are making both on and off the field. “I look forward to the opportunity to lead the side as we take the Club forward and push for four-day success.”
