CMFL Round-up: Selston off to a winning start

The 2016-17 season kicked off in conditions more suited to sunbathing than soccer, with several teams setting their intentions firmly on the line in the opening fixtures.

Defending Black Dragon Badges South champions Selston got off to a winning start by the odd goal in five at Blidworth Welfare.

They didn’t get off to the best of starts Keenan Leeds giving the home side a fourth minute lead from the penalty spot.

Selston levelled three minutes later through Tom Widdowson and went in front thanks to 22nd minute Ben Moore goal.

Jake Egginton equalised a couple of minutes before the interval, but Wayne Cooke had the last word 15 minutes from time.

Sherwood Colliery also came from behind at Eastwood Community, all the goals in their 2-1 win coming in the first half. Patrick Webb put Eastwood ahead on 24 minutes, but Jobe Shaw and Lewis English five minutes before the break ensured the Wood got all the points.

Yet another team to overturn a deficit were Linby Colliery who trailed to a goal from Keyworth United’s Gregg Whatnall on the half hour. Two goals in a six minute spell from Matt Murphy and Tom Coupe settled the match in the home side’s favour.

Matlock Town Reserves shared the spoils with newcomers South Normanton Town after a 3-3 draw. Tom Savage, 17-year-old Ben Edgson and an own goal gave the Gladiators a point with Rob Fretwell, Adam Gillott and Shaun Smith on target for the visitors.

Two sides who struggled last time round got off to winning starts. Mickleover RBL shaded their game with Swanwick Pentrich Road coming out on top 2-1. Abideni Lamina got both for the Legion, with Dean Owen replying for the Swans.

There was a winning start also for last season’s wooden spoon holders Southwell City who registered a creditable 2-0 win at Pinxton, the goals coming from Tom Tyler and Jonathan Nussey.

The goals flowed in the Black Dragon Badges North division, the five matches producing 33 between them.

AFC Bentley’s first match in the CML saw them go behind twice to Welbeck Lions before the visitors finally subsided to a 12-2 defeat. Ricky Geeson and David Holland both put Welbeck in front, before the avalanche started , the home side’s goals coming from Gary and Shaun Mundy who each scored a hat trick, Andy Walkden and Courtney Peynado with two apiece, Jack Varley and Rainsford Anthony.

Clay Cross Town had seven different scorers in their 7-0 defeat of Bilsthorpe. Ant Lynam missed a third minute penalty, but soon made amends as he gave the Millers the lead on 14 minutes. Tomas Poole added a second two minutes later, a Greg Fitzpatrick penalty ensuring a comfortable half time lead.

The goals continued at regular intervals in the second half, Ryan Watters, Callum Lytham, Aiden Ordidge and Lee Clay all adding to the score.

Newark Town started the season on a positive note with a 5-1 win at Dinnington Town. Kieron Wall and Jammy Lloyd put the Blues two up at half time, Wall adding a second and Dom Swingler also getting two, Dinnington replying with a Matt Bradley penalty.

FC Bolsover’s debut match saw them reduced to ten men in the first half, before Dayle Hutson put visitors Appleby Frodingham on 63 minutes to round off a 2-0 win for Frod.

Two goals in three second half minutes gave Phoenix a share of the points in a 2-2 draw at Thorne Colliery. Austin Hallam put the home side ahead after 25 minutes but quick-fire goals from Sohail Hussein and Rob Gorman put Phoenix in front. Hallam rescued a point for Thorne with his second half way through the second period.

There were just two games in the YourFootballWorld.com Reserve division. Henry Brooks scored the only goal of the game at Highfield Road to give Swanwick the points at Mickleover RBL, while Mickey Taylor was Sherwood Colliery’s scorer as they went down 2-1 at home to Eastwood Community.
