The much-delayed 2012 Derbyshire County Cricket League T20 Final took place on Monday in sunny conditions at Alfreton CC with Marehay losing a high-scoring game to Matlock.
Matlock batted first and their innings of 218 was dominated by a knock of 151 not out from South African sensation Devon Conway, who returned to the club to stamp his mark on the game in no uncertain terms.
As Matlock’s overseas star last season, Conway scored 1500 runs but would have missed the original date for the final as he had already flown home. On Monday, he took only 65 balls to make his unbeaten 151, which included 15 sixes and eight fours.
Needing 219 at 10.95 runs per over, Marehay were seeking a dynamic start and got it in the form of Jonathan Bradder, who hit 20 runs off the first over. The rate slowed a little when Bradder was off strike but only seven overs had gone with the total at 70-2.
The required run rate was maintained until young leg spinner Drew Mullaney turned the game by taking 4-23.
The aggression of Bradder and his ability to retain strike still kept Richard Wood’s side in the hunt but in the end they finished 23 runs short with Bradder making a fine 101 not out.
