Heanor’s teenage archery star Hollie Smith has earned a call-up to the Great Britain team for the upcoming European Youth Cup in Austria.
The event will take place in the impressive Wörthersee Stadion in Klagenfurt from 19-23 May, with Smith having been selected for the cadet team (17 and under) despite only being 13-years-old and the youngest member of the squad.
She will compete as an individual and in the three-girl cadet team with the potential to also be involved in the cadet mixed team.
The Heanor Gate Science College student has been in fine form over the last 12 months but her dad Ian says it was still a surprise to be included in the Team GB squad.
He said: “She was really shocked.
“The plan for 2014 was to get into the GB development squad, which she did, and she managed to obtain the qualifying scores for the World Championships for which there will be a selection shoot at Lilleshall in April.
“It’s been her best year to date so to be rewarded with a spot in the GB squad is fantastic.”
Hollie was U14 junior outdoor national champion in 2014 as well as being ranked the top U14 archer in the country and joint third across the U18 juniors.
The Derwent Bowmen shooter was also crowned the Derbyshire Senior Ladies indoor champion, Amber Valley Junior Sportswoman of the Year and runner-up in the Derbyshire Junior Sportswoman of the Year. Hollie also broke three national records, one of which being an unbeatable maximum score for the under 14 round.
Ian added: “Hollie will head to a squad day at Lilleshall in March to practice with the team before then flying out to Austria in May.
“The next aim is to qualify in the top three in April’s selection shoot to earn a place in the team for the World Championships in July which will be held in Yankton, USA”
“The cadet girls category is one of the toughest for Hollie to get into as there is so much talent in the category at the moment and they are all so close together in standard.
“Hollie has received crucial support over the last year from Derbyshire Sport’s ICON programme, Derwent Bowmen, Specsavers (Ilkeston) and her product sponsors - Loughborough-based Mybo, Derby-based Reign Bowstrings, Arrowsocks and XS Wings, as well as her coach, Simon Scott. Without their assistance, none of this would be possible.”
