All-round success for Lineker as Alfreton make a fine start

Alfreton CC began their 2013 campaign with a resounding nine-wicket victory at Rolls-Royce Leisure in what was a dominant performance.

Put in to bat, Rolls-Royce lost captain Sahd Shafiq for just three, Jonathon Clarke grabbing the first wicket of the season.

One soon became two down as Adam Burton grabbed his first wicket back with Alfreton, having Asher Alam caught by Clarke for six.

Malik Sarfraz (17) and Omar Yussean (13) revived the Rolls-Royce innings to give hope of setting a decent total for Alfreton to chase.

However, the quality of the Alfreton attack shone through, Alex Mace trapping Sarfraz LBW with the returning John Aspinall finding the edge of Yussean. Another new signing, keeper Mark Stokes, completed the formalities.

At 47-4, Alfreton were keen to stay on the front foot and regular wickets allowed them to do so. Mace was the pick of the bowlers with 4-30.

Matt Lineker produced figures of 2-5, Rolls-Royce capitulating to just 88 all out.

In reply, there were a few early scares as Christian Pratt (2) and Mace (0) were removed in quick succession, by Mehmoon Tariq and Mohammed Khan respectively.

Despite the early wobble, the calm and collected Lineker (54 not out), ably supported by Andy Gwatkin (17 not out), guided Alfreton to their first win of the season.

Alfreton have their first home game this Saturday as they entertain Duffield looking to build on this impressive start.
