Alfreton’s Harvey Martin and Swanwick’s Max Foord nominated for Derbyshire Sports Awards
An Alfreton sailor and Swanwick powerlifter have been named as finalists for the 2014 Derbyshire Sports Awards.
Harvey Martin (15), has been shortlisted in the Huub Design Junior Sportsman of the Year category after a superb year out on the water in tandem with double-handed dinghy partner Bobby Hewitt.
The pairing have won the national title in Weymouth, the European Championships in Holland, the RS Feva Crown Cup in the Czech Republic and the RS Feva Worlds in France, where they beat off competition from 20 nations to win the 14-race series with a race to spare.
Harvey’s rise has been aided by many hours of land-based strength and conditioning work at the Derbyshire Institute of Sport, giving him an edge in what is a physically demanding sport, particularly when the conditions are windy and wavy.
“I’m very proud to have made the final shortlist to the award and it’s a great achievement for me,” he said. “I know being nominated is a great achievement, but it would be fantastic to go on and win it.”

He has set a new Teen 75kg Raw Bench Press powerlifting world record and was also crowned World, European and British champion in the same category.
