Alfreton CC travelled to Elvaston on Saturday looking to build on their convincing win against Staveley Welfare the previous week.
Unfortunately the toss didn’t turn up on the right side for Alex Mace and his team on this occasion and they were asked to bat first.
Alfreton’s innings started dreadfully as they were reduced to 12-2, both Graham Bush (10) and Ryan Bramwell (1) falling in quick succession to Naeem Akhtar.
Alex Mace (37) and Andy Gwatkin (30) shared a 62 partnership to steady the ship yet they both fell to Akhtar giving him 4-34, the Alfreton duo failing to capitalise on promising starts.
Jonathon Clarke (4) and Dean Whitmore (3) then fell to leave Alfreton teetering on 104-6 and looking at a below-par total.
However, Jake Simpson had other ideas as he took to the Elvaston bowling with six fours and two sixes in a fine knock of 56 off just 63 balls.
Simpson ably assisted by Jonathan Evans (13), guided Alfreton to a decent total of 182 after the troubles of earlier.
However, Alfreton were going to need early wickets if they were to defend a relatively small total but none were forthcoming as Elvaston’s batsmen found going a lot easier than Alfreton’s.
Impressive knocks from Nick Briars (43), Tom Cosford (38), Paul Birch (38) and Akhtar (36*) saw the home team over the line for the loss of only four wickets, Ben Slater, Clarke, Gwatkin and Tom Bexton the recipients of the wickets to fall. Saturday’s ball sponsor was the ACC Social Committee.
Alfreton host bottom side Cutthorpe at the weekend looking to bounce back and get back to winning ways.
A player reunion for Alfreton former players will be held on Saturday, June 16.
Alfreton CC first team will be playing Marehay on the day and the game will start at 1pm.
