Alfreton CC 1sts enjoyed their third positive result in as many weeks on Saturday, which means they remain top of the Division One table by five points.
Clifton were the opponents and visiting captain Campbell Ogilvie won the toss and put Alfreton in.
Alfreton had a setback early on when Matt Lineker fell to Simon Moore for four which brought Alfreton captain Alex Mace to the crease.
He and Tom Bentley, promoted to the top of the order, rebuilt as they shared in a stand of 54.
Mace was then bowled by Achin Chand, the first of his four wickets, to leave the score on 74-2.
Wickets fell at the other end as Chand continued his good work but Bentley shepherded the innings to a good platform before he was Chand’s fourth victim.
That left John Aspinall at the crease and he produced the fireworks that were needed to see Alfreton set a good total.
His knock lasted just 83 balls but included seven fours and seven sixes, the last of which saw him end on 99 not out, with the score on 255-7.
In reply, the first wicket yielded 40 before Adam Burton bowled Matt Wilson for 20.
All Clifton batsman got starts with Alex Woolliscroft going on to make 68, but regular wickets stifled Clifton’s progress.
In the end, there was too much left to do for the Clifton middle order and, despite quickfire knocks from Faisal Khan (49*) and Chand (43), they fell just short.
Clifton finished on 226-6 with Alfreton getting the winning draw, Burton getting two wickets, with one apiece for Lineker and Gwatkin.
Alfreton’s next game is on Saturday against Elvaston at home, before they open their Marston’s Smooth Trophy campaign against Sandiacre on Sunday.
