Denby CC first XI had a week to forget when they were comprehensively beaten in their Premier League clash at Lullington Park.
The league defeat followed the news that they had been expelled from the Premier League T20 competition for playing an ineligible player.
It had all started so well when on the diamond jubilee Monday they won through in the group stage of the premier league T20.
A first round victory over a weak Ilkeston Rutland team saw them up against Premier League leaders Swarkestone who had won through in the final over against Clifton.
Batting first Denby amassed 193 with Dan Burgoyne’s 65 leading the way.
Swarkestone were always behind the rate finishing some 40 runs short when the overs ran out.
The joy at qualification however was short lived as shortly after the close the club was informed that they had played an illegal player and news of their removal from the competition followed later in the week.
While there is no doubt the rules were broken, there is also no doubt that a number of clubs in the competition were unaware that a different set of rules were in place for the T20 competition.
It is hard to comprehend that the four teams at Denby, plus the premier league competition manager all went through the day seemingly unaware of the situation which later unfolded.
The week got worse when the team slumped to a heavy defeat at Lullington Park. Richard Green hit 86 from a final total of 194 for 7 for the hosts. Paul Allen impressed as he took 2-32 while Greg Cork took 3-62. The final total was a good recovery as at the 20 over stage the innings stood at 50 for 3. The Denby reply was disastrous. Within four overs the total stood at two runs for the loss of five wickets as Singh and Lewis tore the Denby batting apart. The only double-figure score came from Cork with 34 and the innings was all over in 22 overs for 53.
Denby will be looking for better fortunes this Saturday when they will need a much-improved performance against Spondon in the Derbyshire Premier League at the Copper Yard ground. Start time is 12.30pm.
