Young BMX fans lead campaign for track to be built in village

A YOUNG group of BMX and skateboarding enthusiasts are campaigning for a skate park be built in Marehay.

An exhibition evening was held on Thursday for nearby residents to view plans to build a competition-standard skatepark on wasteland to the rear of Marehay Miners’ Welfare.

The group, all aged under 21, already have the backing of Derbyshire County Council, Blend Youth Project and Derby College, among others.

They are hopeful that the project could be funded by National Lottery money and say the development would bring youth provisions to Marehay as well as new members into the welfare club there.

Josh Rogers, 20, from Greenwich, Ripley, who is one of those behind the proposal, said: “There is nothing in Marehay for younger people. We hope this will provide something for the whole community.”

He said they had considered the effect on wildlife, saying the site would be screened from view and would include damping against noise.
