World record bid at church

Singers from Heanor Baptist Church joined churches in Sweden, Canada, the USA, and the Hebridean island of Tiree, along with congregations across the UK, in celebrating Christmas.

The Guinness World Record bid for the largest number of Christmas carol singers singing at the same time became an international event on Sunday December 16 at 7pm.

Pastor David Howe said: “It was magnificent. We enjoyed a wonderful evening with a sense of belonging to a much larger event.”

Co-ordinators Premier Christian Radio failed to improve upon their current world record of 18,114 singers in multiple locations, but said the event was viewed as “a highly successful outreach exercise, attracting many people who are not usually church goers into their local churches across the country.”

Mr Howe added: “Around 13,000 enthusiastic singers, gathered in nearly 150 churches for the attempt on the previous record with fierce competition from the weather and the two rival TV attractions of the Strictly Come Dancing semi-finals and the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards.”

The carols were Silent Night, O Come All Ye Faithful, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Away in a Manger, and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.
