Work underway on hydrotherapy pool for Derbyshire school

Students are one step closer to splashing around after work has started on an '¨Alfreton school's hydrotherapy pool.

The work started at Alfreton Park Community Special School last week, after five years of fundraising.

Swimming teacher Margaret Clarke, with the support of parents dedicated their time to raising £58,000 to fund the project.

This – together with a grant from Derbyshire County Council – has enabled the pool to get the go-ahead.

The grant will cover the cost of the build, the fundraising will provide additional items such as sensory equipment, specialised lighting, both of which are essential to provide a more stimulating and enjoyable environment for the children.

Margaret said: “I have always been passionate about my job and the benefits of hydrotherapy and swimming for all, none more so than over the past five years of hard work and fundraising.

Our pool is another classroom where all our pupils are free to learn, achieve and aspire and most of all they are happy and content which is what I feel my 30 years of working here at Alfreton Park School has helped to achieve.”

Work began on building the new hydrotherapy pool this month, and the contractors Henry Bros Limited – a Nottingham based company – has already made great progress with this project.

It is anticipated that the pool will be completed by September.

Headteacher Cheryl Smart added: “I am thrilled to see the work is progressing well and the pool is off to a great start.

“The whole community and the local authority have given us so much support in raising the funds required. It has been a real team effort.

“The children are really excited about having a new pool and it will be a fantastic facility for our pupils and the whole community to use.”
