A woman from Heanor has been given a special award by a housing association for her efforts in the community.
Wendy Wharton, of Hands Road, was given the award by Futures Homescape, after her neighbour and friend Claire Hall nominated her.
Wendy was surprised at her home by a member of staff from Futures who presented her with a bunch of flowers, a gift voucher and a certificate for winning the award.
Wendy said: “It’s so unexpected, I had no idea I’d been nominated – what did I do?
“I’m absolutely made up, I don’t know what to say except thank you.”
Friend Claire Hall nominated Wendy for being “a great friend” and for making a difference to the lives of her neighbours with “a positive attitude”.
Claire said: “She’s always there when I need something and I just wanted to let her know what she means to us.”
The award, which has been running for more than 10 years and seeks to find tenants who go the extra mile in making their communities a better place to live.
Karen Ainsworth, who presented the award to Wendy, said: “The Good Neighbour Award is all about people who help to build communities and look out for each other, which is why it’s such a wonderful project to work on.”
