Weightlifting champ speaks in the News

A WORLD champion weightlifter has revealed how his extraordinary career began at a Langley Mill club.

The life of three-times Commonwealth Games gold medalist Louis Martin could have been very different had he not taken up the offer to compete in a bodybuilding contest at the town’s miners’ welfare in 1957.

He had been training at a gym on Leacroft Road in Derby, when the gym’s secretary asked Louis, who had only just moved to England from Jamaica on an electrician’s apprenticeship in the city, to take part in the regional heat of the Mr Universe competition.
