Officers from the Ilkeston Safer Neighbourhood Team are urging people to ensure that they lock their cars when they are left unattended.

The warning comes after 10 vehicles were attacked in the last week with various electrical items and pieces of clothing taken from the cars.

The majority of the vehicles had been left insecure when parked overnight.

Sergeant John Troup from the team said: “In some respects it is a good sign that people feel secure enough in their neighbourhoods that they can leave their vehicles insecure, however this shows that we do have criminals that will take an easy opportunity to steal items from cars that are not locked.

“Most of the offences have happened in the Garden Avenue, Park Avenue and Bristol Road area but we have had some other offences across the rest of Ilkeston.

“We are determined to catch those responsible and will be targeting the issue at the relevant times with a mixture of overt and covert patrols, however we would ask residents to help us help them by being extra vigilant and by locking their vehicles, particularly overnight.”
