William Gregg Leisure Centre in Heanor has played host to a taster session for a new sport that is spreading rapidly throughout the country.

Walking football is ideal for those aged 50-plus but can be played by a range of people regardless of their age or physical ability.

The event attracted a great mix, ranging from current players from established groups in Derbyshire to people from the local area who had never played before.

The event was organised by Amber Valley Village Games in partnership with Derbyshire County FA.

Community sports
activator Beth Turner said: “When people first hear about walking football, they assume that it will be played at a snail’s pace and lack the excitement of the traditional game but they are usually in for a pleasant surprise.”

Regular sessions will now take place every week on a Wednesday from 11.30amto 12.30pm at the Hand’s Road leisure centre and cost £2 per player.
