Volunteer gardeners needed for hub scheme

GREEN-fingered volunteers are being sought by Derby College, which runs the Heanor college campus, to help support its expanding Food Hub scheme.

The Food Hub, supported by £299,000 from the Big Lottery Fund’s Local Food scheme, was set up last October to help people to learn how to grow their own produce.

Community growing projects have so far been set up with local primary schools and regular advice and guidance sessions are being held at the Food Hub’s own kitchen garden.

The hub, which is planning to set up more community growing projects, now needs a number of volunteer helpers to join up.

Food hub project worker Rebecca Pollard said: “With so much going on already and many more projects in the pipeline, we are going to need help from volunteers who want to share their love of gardening with other people. The kitchen garden has been a great project – showing people that they can plant a combination of flowers and vegetables in a smaller space very effectively and this will hopefully inspire people to do the same at home.”

Anybody interested in getting involved in the Food Hub should contact the team on 01332 520200 ext 6618. Volunteers will need to be CRB checked and be available during the week with occasional weekend activities.
