VIDEO: Happy Birthday Sonic the Hedgehog
Two new games are in the pipeline to celebrate the 25th birthday of the world's most famous blue hedgehog.
A generation has grown up with the Sega mascot after he first hit our screens in the summer of 1991 causing mayhem with Mario, since then he has been collecting gold rings and still travelling at a supersonic speed.
The announcement of the two news games was made at San Diego Comic-Con last month but they will not be hitting shops until 2017.
Project Sonic the game introduces a modern iteration of Sonic before zooming past the 1990s classic design, which is very similar to Sonic Generations.
The next game is Sonic Mania, which is revealed to give nostalgic retro players a run for their money for bringing back the old games’ mechanics and tone.
The title brings the fast-paced 2D platforming style of Sonic back to the console scene, alongside playable characters Sonic, Tails and Knuckles.
Since his inception he has since gone on to star in over 30 titles and his Sega Mega Drive titles are widely regarded as classics.
Speaking at the convention Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka said: “Sonic Mania has been a passion project for the entire team and we look forward to sharing more details about it later this year.”
