VIDEO: Greg Dyke urges businesses to back £1m Weston Park cancer appeal

A £1 Million appeal to business leaders to boost world leading cancer services in Sheffield has been kicked off by FA chairman Greg Dyke.

He was was the high profile guest speaker at the launch of a new Weston Park 2020 for Business campaign.

The campaign aims to engage businesses across the Sheffield City Region with Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity to raise an additional £1 million for local cancer services over the next five years.

Companies are being asked to make a minimum corporate donation of £1,000 a year for the next five years, which will be invested in projects that will enable Weston Park Hospital to remain at the forefront of cancer care.

Ther former broadcaster and journalist owns four hotels in Sheffield, who chose Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity as their appeal for the year and offered to help launch the campaign.

Mr Dyke addressed the business community with a direct and impassioned plea.

Experts believe one in two people - born since the 1960’s - will develop cancer in their lifetime, so the number of people requiring cancer services will continue to increase rapidly, the launch heard.

Mr Dyke outlined how for a small investment, businesses can now make a huge impact on the way cancer services are delivered,

Weston Park Hospital is one of only a handful of specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire – a population of almost 1.8million people.

“As a business community we have the power to pull together and make a meaningful and lasting difference to cancer patients in this region,” he said.

“For the benefit of cancer patients both now and in the future, I urge you to support this campaign.”

Generous Sheffield based Westfield Health announced they will match fund the first 20 sign ups to the campaign.

“This means if 20 companies sign up and we are hoping for about 50 to 100 this year - but if 20 sign up already, that means we will have raised already £40,000,” said delighted Tina Harrison, Deputy Director of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.
