Tributes to '˜stalwart' former Chesterfield mayor

Tributes have been paid after former Chesterfield mayor Geoffrey Waddoups died following a short illness.

Mr Waddoups died on Tuesday, June 28 after spending several weeks in hospital.

He was first elected as Labour councillor for Newbold ward in 1979 serving until 1999 and was the borough’s mayor in 1996/97.

During his time in office he served on many council committees including: housing, recreation and leisure, policy and resources and environmental services and control committees and was chair of the transport committee and vice chair of the economic development sub-committee.

Mr Waddoups is survived by his wife, Maureen.

Councillor John Burrows, Chesterfield Borough Council’s leader, said: ”Former councillor Geoff Waddoups was a stalwart of the Labour council in Chesterfield.

“He was a formidable fighter for right and against injustice to the working man and woman. Our sympathy and thoughts are with Mrs Waddoups and her family.”

Mr Waddoups’s funeral will take place at Chesterfield and District Crematorium on Thursday 7 July at 10.10am.
