A Heanor- based parent and baby group has had a cash boost to upgrade facilities after a Christmas donation from a housing association.

Derbyshire housing association Futures Homescape has granted the Heanor Weenies more than £430 to buy a new play-pen that will help smaller children play safely.

Heanor Weenies founder Jacqui Saunders said: “The children that come here are all different ages, so the new play-pen will help us create a new baby area where the smaller children are out of the way and parents don’t feel like they’ve got to hold them all the time.”

The cheque was presented by Futures Homescape inside the group’s Santa’s Grotto at the Wilmot Street Centre, where children from the group took it in turns to visit Father Christmas.

The money for the new equipment was awarded as part of Futures Homescape’s Your Vote Your Choice Community Grant Scheme. Community groups were invited to apply for cash to help fund days or new materials.

Futures Homescape’s community development manager Sarah Whattam said: “The Heanor Weenies is a group that many parents rely on every week.

“I am thrilled that they’ve been able to take advantage of our Your Vote Your Choice Community Grant Scheme, to create a special area for smaller children.

“The scheme is all about reaching out and helping some of the brilliant clubs and groups out there who are doing some amazing things in the community.

“It is great to know we are supporting that.”

Funding from the Futures Homescape Your Vote Your Choice Community Grant Scheme will be open again in March 2015.
