A SPATE of purse thefts from town centre shops sparked increased police patrols and undercover work in Alfreton.
After being informed of the thefts at a safer neighbourhood meeting, officers went undercover to gather information and also raised awareness by giving out purse bells and security advice. Officers reported a “slight improvement” in the number of purse thefts and said their patrols would continue through January.
Anti-social behaviour in the Watchorn area was another issue raised at the meetings. Some homeowners completed diaries to help officers gather information and monitor particular issues.A spokeswoman for Derbyshire police said: “Since this work began calls to police about the Watchorn area have reduced significantly and local residents have commented on the improvement in the community. We are now continuing to monitor the situation by maintaining patrols and working closely with local residents.”
