One woman has lobbed of her locks to help make wigs for sick children.

Claire Potter, 42, from Ripley has said goodbye to 14 inches of hair when she went under the scissors for the Little Princess Trust.

The charity creates real-hair wigs for children undergoing cancer treatment.

Claire said: “It was something I’d been thinking about for a while and so this year I decided to just go for it. My hair has always been long and so it’s a huge change that I’ll have to get used to but if my hair can help a child going through such a difficult time then it’s a no-brainer really.”

Awareness of The Little Princess Trust rocketed when Jessie J donated her hair back in 2013 and since then the charity has enlisted the help of well-known ambassadors to help spread the word and last month embarked on its first ever social media campaign, #HairToSpare, designed to encourage people to give their long hair to the cause.

It was formed in 2005 following the death of death of little girl who lost her hair and her life to cancer and her parents wanted something positive to come out of her death.

Since its inception, the charity has now helped thousands of boys and girls.

Claire was in the hands award-winning salon KH Hair, where Claire is a client, and gave her the snip.

When it was cut off weighed a hefty 225g (8oz) of hair is now making its way to specialist wig makers – that’s a quarter of a bag of sugar.

Salon Director Sarah Storer said: “It’s a complete transformation and can be quite a shock when you have this much hair cut off so it’s such a brave decision and we’re honoured that she chose KH Hair to do the cut.

“The work the Little Princess Trust do is fantastic and we’re sure the hair will go towards a wig that will put a big smile on the face of an even braver young person.”
