The procurement team of a Ripley housing provider has scooped a national industry title, and commendation for its work with small businesses.

The four-person department of Futures Housing Group beat organisations including NHS Wales, Northern Ireland Water and Kent and Essex Police to be named team of the year at the Go Procurement Awards last month.

The team was recognised for its exceptional creativity in communications with contractors and staff, particularly around procurement rules.

Procurement and contracts manager John Thornhill said: “To be crowned the best in the procurement business is no mean feat and something I am truly proud of.

“We’re a small team and we work hard to ensure that what can be a dry subject is easy to understand and not only means we secure the best results for our customers, but supports the local community.”

The UK National GO Awards recognise public sector procurement excellence and celebrate the role public, private and third sector organisations play in supporting the delivery of public services.

They are regarded by many as the benchmark by which progress in public sector commissioning is measured.

Futures, which manages more than 9,000 homes across the East Midlands was among 130 finalists at the awards.

It was also highly commended in the GO Leading Procurement Practice category for the team’s work with small and medium-sized contractors.

In 2016, it became the first organisation to adopt a new form of contract framework to encourage those firms to do business with the housing association, even on the biggest contracts.

Chairman of the judging panel Grahame Steed said: “The UK National GO Awards have showcased the depth of innovation, creativity and commitment in place across the country’s procurement community.

“The judging panel were impressed with the quality and variety of the submissions, which clearly demonstrate the UK’s growth in this area. All of the finalists – whether public, private or third sector – are to be commended for their outstanding work.”
