Last year in Amber Valley, over 800 familes lost an average of over £750 each thanks to the bedroom tax.
The Government estimates that nationally 63per cent of those affected are disabled, as defined by the Disability Discrimination Act. It has been described by the National Housing Federation as “trapping many people in homes they can no longer afford and where they are struggling to pay their rents. It is heaping misery and hardship on already struggling families, pushing them into arrears. As we feared and warned, the bedroom tax is having a disastrous impact. The only solution is to abolish this policy which fails on every level.” On Wednesday, December 17, the ConDem government narrowly avoided defeat on a motion by Labour to repeal this most hated and unjust legislation since the Poll Tax. How infuriating and depressing that both our local Conservative MPs, Nigel ‘Candy Crush’ Mills, the MP for Amber Valley and Pauline Latham, MP for Mid Derbyshire, voted to keep the bedroom tax and to keep on taking money away this Christmas from some of the most vulnerable people in our society. Yet more proof that Tories just don’t get it.
