Police stand by victims of France lorry massacre

Derbyshire police has issued a release standing with the victims of 'sickening' modern terrorism, and reminds of the work authorities and forces are doing to prevent people from being radicalised and joining or supporting terrorist groups.

A spokesman said: "Our thoughts are with the families & friends affected by the tragic events in Nice last night, in which 84 people died, including children.

"A lorry drove through a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in what French President Francois Hollande has labeled 'undeniable terrorist nature'."

"As terrorism and extremism continue to play a sickening part in the world in which we live, it’s worth noting that there are specialisms that exist which are trying to combat it."

The East Midlands Prevent team, part of the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU), is about safeguarding people and communities from the threat of terrorism.

Prevent is 1 of the 4 elements of CONTEST, the Government’s counter-terrorism strategy, with the aim to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.

"If you have any concerns about terrorism or extremism in Derbyshire, or indeed beyond, call the Prevent team on 101 in a non-emergency situation or 999 in an emergency," added the force.
