Derbyshire high street bank to close for good
Ripley’s high street branch of Barclays will close in June.
The banking firm says that the decision has been made because not enough people make use of the branch – and that others are nearby.
Barclays says that the High Street branch will close on Tuesday, June 18.
It will not leave the town without town centre banks, with branches of Nationwide and Lloyds located nearby in Oxford Street.
The firm has applied to Amber Valley Borough Council to remove the existing ATM machine from the building’s wall, replace it with a window, and to remove all signage and cameras.
It says the main reasons for closure are that the number of transactions at the branch have dipped in the last two years and 81 per cent of customers also use other methods to do their banking, including online and on the phone.
Barclays says that customers using other methods to bank have increased by nearly a fifth since 2012.
It says that in the past 12 months, almost half of its Ripley customers used other neighbouring branches.
On top of this, it says that only 97 customers use the Ripley branch exclusively for their banking.
In a “reasons for closure” document, for its Ripley branch, Barclays says: “Before we make the decision to close any branch, we think carefully about how it has been used so far.
“We consider how many customers have been visiting, what kind of transactions they’ve been making, and all the other ways they’ve been choosing to bank with us.
“We also take into consideration the availability of other branches in the wider community.”
It says on its website: “Our branch network and the colleagues who work in them remain a vital part of what we offer our customers.
“Yet with customers visiting our branches less and less each year, we must constantly assess how and why our branches are used and make decisions based on that insight.
“There will be times when this means that we will make the difficult decision to close a branch.”
Barclays says that it’s Ripley branch has 1,854 regular customers – who visit three or more times a year.
It also has 442 customers who visit 12 or more times a year.
Barclays has neighbouring branches in Alfreton, Heanor and Sutton-in-Ashfield.
Free cash machines are available at SMG Convenience Store in High Street, Ripley, as well as at the town’s Nationwide and Lloyds banks.
Nearby Post Offices are available in Derby Road, Ripley; High Street, Codnor; and High Street, Swanwick.
