One of the country’s first ‘celebrant’ funeral officiants, based in Nether Heage, says her first year in business has been a resounding success - completing more than 300 ‘celebratory’ send-offs.

Former registrar Sally Ward, of The Brook, began training for the role in 2009, after she organised her father’s funeral with more of an onus on celebrating his life - rather than mourning his loss.

Her business, The Derbyshire Celebrant, sees Sally conduct services which include spiritual elements such as hymns, prayers, blessings or meditations.

She said: “These life-centred funerals truly celebrate ‘the person’ whilst at the same time sensitively honouring the grief of those left behind.”

Last week Sally, who is married to award winning folk musician John Tams, even conducted a ceremony at Pride Park stadium.
