Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard today, Friday, May 6, how Norman Madeley, 71, of Fairfield Road, Horsley Woodhouse, Ilkeston, was caught drink-driving on the A608 Heanor Road, in Heanor.

Prosecuting solicitor Sarah Haslam said: “A call was received by police that Norman Madeley regularly drinks and drives and he drinks at the Red Lion pub.

Police arrived in the area and waited for his car to be driven home and he was stopped by police.

“His daughter and her 18-month-old son were present in the car and Madeley failed a drink-drive test.”

Madeley, who is a man of previous good character, pleaded guilty to exceeding the drink-drive limit after he recorded 46microgrammes of alcohol in 100millilitres of breath when the drink-drive limit is 35microgrammes.

The defendant, who represented himself, said: “I was reported by a member of the public. I thought I was okay with the amount I had drunk but I was over the limit and I admit it. Then 30 minutes later I was let out by the police and I was under the limit. I miscalculated and I accept it.”

Magistrates fined him £160 and ordered him to pay a £30 victim surcharge and £85 costs.

They also disqualified him from driving for 12 months after the incident on April 21.

Madeley declined to take a drink-drive rehabilitation course to reduce his disqualification and stated that once his ban was completed he would not be driving much any more.
