It’s that time of year again, when we invite you to honour our community heroes.

TIME is running out to enter our New Year Honours Awards for 2012 – as we call on you to nominate your unsung heroes.

Many people across our towns work tirelessly for the benefit of others and we are giving you the chance to name those you believe deserve special recognition.

We will be presenting our winners with certificates at a ceremony at Field Terrace Community Centre off Slack Lane, Ripley, on Wednesday, January 18.

There is no age limit for those you can nominate and their good deeds can be anything from helping at a local club, encouraging eco-campaigns and raising funds for charity, to fetching the shopping for a neighbour or caring for a sick relative.

If you know someone who has gone the extra mile for the community – let us know.

News editor Julie Crouch said: “There are many unsung heroes out there who help make our communities tick through their vital work and good deeds.

“These people do not seek out rewards for what they do in any shape or form, and without them our lives would be the poorer.

“We had some very worthy winners last time.”

Make sure you nominate someone you know about by filling in the coupon on page 18.”

Last year’s honours saw Nora Fotherby of Heanor nominated for her years of fundraising work in the community.

The 85-year-old was one of the founding members of Heanor Hospital’s League of Friends back in 1962.

She was joined by ten other pillars of the local community at March’s ceremony.

David and Lilian Rowley, chairman and secretary of the Heanor Operatic Society, were nominated for their years of star performances behind the curtain by a fellow society member.

Speaking this week David said: “I have to say it was a really nice surprise to be awarded in March. It’s great to get recognition for the amount of time we put into the society and we continue to do that.”

To make a nomination for this year, get this week’s Ripley and Heanor News and fill in the coupon, including your nominee’s name and contact details, along with the reason you are nominating them. Then drop the coupon into our offices at, 27 Grosvenor Road, Ripley. Don’t forget to include your name, address and contact number, too. Nominations must be in by Monday, December 30.
