The theme park, which was based close to Ilkeston, closed in 2006 following financial struggles and the site is now earmarked for 300 new homes.

More than 5,000 people have now signed the petition, which was started by Declan Salmon who used to visit the theme park as a child.

He said: “Sign this petition and let’s see if we can get The American Adventure back open for business in a different location with brand new attractions and coasters.

“Once we get 10,000 signatures I’ll send it to Derbyshire County Council. The sooner people sign, the better chance we have of getting the American Adventure back.

“If the American Adventure does reopen somewhere else in the future, it will attract so many visitors and it will be a huge boost to the community and for the UK, not just Derbyshire.”

He suggested that new attractions could be built as well as roller coasters, food outlets, gift shops and pubs.

Little remains at the site of the former theme park in Shipley. Some of the rides are in use at other theme parks and everything else has been demolished.

At its peak, the park attracted thousands of people every day and used to host events.

To sign the petition log onto change.org and type in American Adventure.
