Lessons to be learnt after fire tragedy

Derbyshire’s most senior firefighter has said lessons must be learnt after three people were jailed this week for the manslaughter of six children in a house fire.

Chief Fire Officer Sean Frayne, of Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service, was speaking after the sentencing of Mick Philpott, his wife Mairead and friend Paul Mosley.

He said it would be tragic if the event does not produce some impetus to prevent further incidents in the future. Four children died in a house fire in Hulland Ward in 2011 and two children in Buxton in 2010, as well as 14 other fire deaths across Derbyshire since April 2010.

Mr Frayne said: “We will continue to work tirelessly to prevent all instances of fire death within Derbyshire. The tragic events at Victory Road in Derby reinforce the need for positive steps to be taken to raise awareness of domestic sprinklers and the benefits they can bring.”

In May last year well-wishers walked through Heage and Allestree to raise money for the funeral of the six children.
