Ilkeston goes crazy for mysterious garden gnomes

A buzz is whirring around Ilkeston residents and businesses as gnomes continue to be the talk of the town.

Garden gnomes were first spotted on the island in Nottingham Road on Friday (July 18), close to where work is being carried out on a new Morrisons store.

The roundabout, completed a few weeks ago, was installed with an artificial grass surface rather than real grass, on which someone homed a family of gnomes.

The collection of gnomes was diverse, including one sporting a sign reading ‘LOL’ and an ornamental car complete with flowers.

A public outcry then unfolded when the gnomadic group mysteriously disappeared over the weekend, leading to the creation of a Facebook page for one of the gnomes.

Ilson Gnome’s first status read: ‘So, it sounds like you’re all missing me then?’

After disappearing for a few days without trace, one briefly reappeared on Monday night.

Local business Bowmer and Kirkland have been tracking the gnomes since last week.

Project manager Tony Mitchell spoke to the Advertiser.

He said: “As I left work at 10pm last night, a new Gnome and a small table had appeared, however this morning just the table remained.”

The firm have placed missing posters for the gnomes outside their site in Nottingham Road, Ilkeston.

Tony also admits having tried to readjust the security cameras from the building to try and capture the person placing the gnomes.

“There was nothing there at around 5.30pm but by 10pm one of the gnomes was back,” he said.

“It’s a mystery.”
