Four pet iguanas were rescued from a serious house fire by firefighters.

Crews from stations at Ripley, Belper, Alfreton and Kingsway in Derby were called to the blaze at a detached bungalow in Derby Road, Denby just before 11pm on Friday night.

It is understood that the property’s occupant managed to escape unhurt but firefighters needed to enter the house wearing breathing equipment to locate the animals.

The crews spent more than three hours at the property cutting away the roof, after the timbers caught fire. Although the cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed, an electrical fault is suspected.
