The black labador was left lying in a pool of blood and owners Tracy and Nick Ireland described it a horror scene.

Speaking to the Derby Telegraph Nick said: “I was gutted to think that someone had broken into our own home and to do that to an innocent dog is absolutely despicable. There was blood everywhere, all over the kitchen, all over the walls, the kitchen cupboard doors.”

As it was a crime scene the blood could not be cleared up until forensics had been and this has been distressing for his sons.

A laptop, designer watches and a cash were all taken and the dog is now resting in the vets and is said to be shaken up but because of his muscly build the stab wounds did not puncture any organs.

The attack happened on Thursday in The Meadows Swanick, and a Derbyshire Police spokesman said: “The break-in appears to have been via an upstairs window and the vet has confirmed that the labrador was stabbed twice in the chest. It is believed to have happened between 12.20pm and 1.30pm on Thursday October 13.

Anyone with information about the incident in The Meadows, Swanwick should call Derbyshire police on 101 quoting reference number 16000321444.
