ORDERING repeat prescriptions early and using out-of-hours services wisely could help thousands of patients better prepare for illness over the Christmas and Bank Holiday period, NHS Derbyshire County say.
Each year, the majority of GP surgeries and pharmacies close over public Bank Holidays during the festive season – but patients often forget that this means they might not be able to pick up their repeat prescription for a few days or use NHS health services the way they usually do.
Now NHS Derbyshire County are reminding patients that doctors’ surgeries and pharmacies will be shutting for two days after Christmas Day, on both the Bank Holiday Monday and Tuesday, December 27. They will also be closed on the day after New Year’s Day on Monday, January 2.
Gail Walder, urgent care manager, said: “Using NHS services wisely is critical to keeping A&E departments free to give care and medical help to those who need it most, so all we’re asking is that people do a little bit of forward planning – to help themselves and others during the busiest time of the year for the NHS.
“We’re also advising anyone who regularly orders a repeat prescription to pop into their pharmacy a week or so early to collect it – as they usually take 48 hours to process under normal circumstances. And anyone needing to see a doctor out of hours should call their surgery as usual and they will be redirected to an out-of-hours GP.”
