RIPLEY and District University of the Third Age (U3A) is a self-help local organisation for people aged 50 or over who are no longer in full-time employment.

At the monthly meeting held at St Joseph’s Hall on Butterley Hill, Ripley, vice-chairman Trevor Steed welcomed 100-plus members and gave out the notices concerning the activities planned for the coming months. Trevor then introduced Ruth Beresford the speaker for the afternoon. Ruth gave an extremely interesting talk about her work in Ghana with VSO (Voluntary Services Overseas) including showing some of the articles she was given and collected while on her travels in Ghana. Ruth had spent two years setting up a home economics room and taught the module to enable students to gain an agricultural degree.

A voluntary contribution was made to Ruth as she continues to raise money for the VSO and to sponsor a student.
